Book Review – The New Business Road Test by John Mullins

In Non-Fiction Writing, Uncategorized on September 22, 2010 at 13:04

On first glance ‘The New Business Road Test, by John Mullins’ is an impressive business book. With quotes from TV Dragons on the back, you’d expect a book that was intent on providing a proper focus on business. This book does not disappoint in this respect. The organisation of the book is centred around what are called ‘The Seven Domains of Attractive Opportunities’. These look at the whole business and entrepreneurial setup in a fully analytical way trying to relate different domains (market, industry and team) with either a macro or micro-level approach to understanding what is going on.

The book itself is split into two halves, one to test your business idea; the other to make the good idea you’ve had in Part 1 work in the wider marketplace. There are sections such as identifying the right market to be in, and whether your idea is relevant to the market that you’re targeting.

Once you’ve had your ‘light bulb moment’ the idea is that this book helps you give it an MoT, looking at who your customers will be, which is the right market to enter with the concept, right down to how committed you are to the idea and what the sustainable advantage is in your business plan.

This is not a light read, and it brings me to mind some of those text books I used to wade through. However, this is not a book to dismiss lightly as there is a lot of common sense advice contained inside it. ‘The New Business Road Test’ is not a use-this-and-your-idea-will -make-you-millions-quickly sort of book. This is a slow burner, one which you will return to time and time again to digest, understand and apply to your business to give it the best start in life.
