Book Review – Dragons Den: The Perfect Pitch, by Peter Spalton

In Non-Fiction Writing on January 25, 2011 at 13:42

You’ve probably heard about Dragon’s Den by now. The hit BBC TV series allows budding entrepreneurs to present and pitch ideas to a set of five Dragons – investors with spare cash looking for the next best thing. The book  “Dragons Den – The Perfect Pitch” tries to give us help in preparing for such a pitch, if we are lucky enough to be in a situation where there is the prospect of investment. This is not to say that this book can only help you if you’re on TV. In the real world, there are investors out there looking, and when the chances come you need to be ready. This book gives you guidance on what you need to be aware of when you make your first impression.

Dragons Den – The Perfect Pitch is a very easy to read book. There are lots of pictures, case studies and advice peppered throughout the book allowing you to either read from cover to cover, or to dip into. The main advice that is common is that a simple approach is best, and you must know everything there is to know about your product, inside and out. This is to ensure that you can answer all the questions to their fullest, and this increases the likelihood of success.

The three golden nuggets are to Present professionally, be prepared for in-depth questions about your business model, and to create a fact-pack for your investor to take away with them. Following the advice in this book doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have backing, but it will get you further than if you had never read it.
