Book Review – The Startup of You by Reid Hoffman

The Start-up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career

With credentials such as the building up of the LinkedIn professional networking site, Reid Hoffman needs little introduction, and it is with that sense of expectation that I picked this book up.

“The Startup of You” is a business empowerment book that uses the same ethos as LinkedIn; that you alone are responsible for your next career move, and that one of the key factors in all of that is to network. This should come as no surprise when you consider where the Mr Hoffman has come from.

There is a lot of good, motivational advice provided in this book, allowing the reader to be swept along into trying some of the techniques described. There are even ‘Invest in Yourself’ sections at the end of chapters, which test and probe your understanding of the attached information.

What this book doesn’t do, however is prescribe an action that will lift the ordinary jobseeker out of the economic mire that we are all in. Yes, there is a lot of energy invested into this book, but the focus is on Mr Hoffman’s universe and maybe not on the wider employment marketplace. This is a book for those who are moderately successful anyway, seeking a higher plane of career satisfaction.
This is a competent book that deserves its place in the pantheon of business writing that we are all being encouraged to seek out as an inspiration to taking control of our lives and going onto bigger and better things. The problem with this book, that despite all of the useful information it provides, if you are familiar with LinkedIn and any other type of business career advice there is a lot you will already know.

Overall this is a useful book to add to the marketplace. What I would have liked to have seen is a couple of chapters to inspire the newbies and those in career deadzones looking for an escape tunnel.
